Combined Sewage Overflow on a Winter day
As some may be aware, the winter skate and walking paths in central Winnipeg were ruined last night. A system called "Combined Sewage Overflow" (CSO) is designed to collect rainwater runoff and domestic sewage and untreated waste, however with the snow melting so drastically, the CSO overflowed into the Assiniboine river and eventually Lake Winnipeg.
This is not something new, usually CSO happens in warmer temperatures and it flows right into the water; therefore becoming hardly noticeable.
The phosphorus released in the water during the CSO is still less than what the North End Treatment Plant releases. This has been a long term problem and the City of Winnipeg continues to act slow with plans to reduce the CSO from 76% to 85% in 2045! The plant needs to be upgraded and the City of Winnipeg is not making it an environmental priority.
