Indigenous Water Monitoring Network
Indigenous peoples have always adapted and responded to change using the best available tools.
Today, many First Nations in the watershed have set up guardian and monitoring programs to make well-informed decisions to protect Lake Winnipeg and our traditional livelihood. These programs fill gaps in scientific understanding by centering Indigenous knowledge and relying on people living on the land.
Working together with these programs, we are developing a network to weave together strength as a collective.
Goals
1. Collect high-quality observable information to support decision making by First Nations peoples and governments.
2. Build the capacity of individual monitoring and guardian programs.
3. Create clear defined indicators, methods and actions to strengthen collaboration between programs.
