We have some issues with Manitoba’s “Water Management Strategy”

Water is a way of life. A life without water is not possible, water is critically important to all living things both in its power to foster life and take it away.

The province of Manitoba has announced plans for a Manitoba Water Management Strategy on April 22, 2021. We previously reviewed the engagement document for the potential strategy in August 2020. We found it missed the mark, actually we found it missed a lot of things:

  • Evidence of meaningful engagement with Indigenous peoples.

  • Most of the areas within the province of Manitoba including the entire north.

  • A process for co-management or partnership with Indigenous peoples.

  • The ability to “no net loss of water retention” which is crucial for wetland survival.

A Manitoba Water Management Strategy should be directed towards the myriad of critical water issues throuhgout the province. If this proceeds as first written then it should be renamed an irrigation plan for southern Manitoba.

Water is life. Why doesn’t the government see it as such?
